    I've not tried it but this is roughly how I would do it.

    1. Load the first picture.
    2. Use Image->canvas Size to double the width
    3. Copy picture 2 to the clipboard and Edit->Past into new Layer.
    4. Adjust the second picture size and position to fit next to picture 1
