    Recordable BD disks


    Hey all,

    I recently bought a new video converter that is capable of converting 2D film into 3D film (oh yes, it's 3D). I can change the bitrate so the output file is 21 gigs, but the problem is that I won't be able to use dual layer DVDs to burn it.

    So I hit up newegg and looked for some 25 gigger disks and they're all Blu-ray burnables. It seems that it will only take a Blu-ray burner to utilize them, at least that's what I've found.

    My question is can a regular DVD burner even burn 20ish gigs of encoded video onto a Blu-ray disk? Keep in mind that I'm not authoring actual Blu-ray movies, only ones that are converted into .wmv 3D to Windows DVD Maker.

    No is the simple answer. Just as a CD-writer is unable to read/write DVDs, a DVD-writer will be unable to read/write Blu-ray disks. Optical drives are backwards-compatible though (on the whole). This means that a DVD-writer will read/write both CDs and DVDs and a BD-writer will be able to read/write Blu-ray disks and most CDs/DVDs.

    No, you'll need a Blu-ray burner.

    It may be the cheapest one price-wise, but it's super fast and has yet to produce a coaster for me. :)

    Thanks for the clarification!

    I guess what I'll have to do then is to convert the video to 3D, then reconvert it down with a lower bitrate and send that off to burn with a dual layer DVD. Bob Saget!
