I've got some of the DVDsoft programs including the Flash converter and uploader. I think I'll do a deeper spyware scan tonight. I'm also happy so far with SolveigMM AVI Trimmer for cleaning up the clips before joining them. On the above suggestions, I was leaning towards Machete for joining my simple AVIs, but I'll look at Virtualdub too.
I appreciate all the help. My old number one favorite computer help forum is getting kind of slow, this might be my new go-to site.

    you can use this program,
VirtualDub download (at SourceForge) - virtualdub.org
I just tested it myself and it works.
Load up the first clip and then in the File Menu choose Append Segment and select the next clip. you can keep appending more clips if you like.
Under Video and Audio make sure Direct Stream Copy is selected.
then go to File, and Save as Avi and choose a new name and you are done.

I just tested the latest version on another pair of files and it works just fine.

    This.

I have also used Avidemux (sorry, don't have a link) and find it just a bit more friendly. Instructions are the same as VirtualDub, load the first clip, append any additional clips, select "Copy" under Audio and Video, choose a name and save.

So far I've tried Machete-lite and it did the job fine. There's a black blip between the joined clips, but when I get time tomorrow I'm sure I can neaten that up. I downloaded and played with Windows Movie maker and it looks pretty useful too. I'm sure it will also join two videos, I just need to learn all of its features. I plan to try some others including VirtualDub.
Y'all got me on the right track, thanks.

I had made a few simple video tutorials on how to use the WLMM. Maybe they are useful for you:

I almost installed some DVDSoft programs, just to see how they would stack up to the programs I already have. It was then that my firewall warned me that Open Candy was trying to connect to the web & I aborted the installation.

If you have an earlier version, it may not be there. If they recently added this, I don't know. The tools sound like good performers, but I tend to shy away from anything with tracking software. But I would like to see how they perform.

While I was doing a full system scan one time, MSE popped up a warning about a DVDSoft program I had yet to install. Not a virus warning though, just "Potentially unwanted software".

The best program to join multiple .avi format videos into a single .avi format video is Avidemux ..... free obviously .

File > Open for the fist clip
File > Append for the subsequent clip/clips
File > Save > Save video to combine clips (in the save dialog box. you are to provide both the output file name and output extension name, say video.avi .

Works much faster, and provides identically equal output quality of your input files .

EDIT : If you want the output to be a .mkv file, use megui .... it also doesnot compromise with quality at all, and free absolutely .

    join two avi files

    use virtual dub 1.9.10

    Merging 2 AVI Files

    - Run VirtualDub
    - Load your original file (File -> Open File...)
    - Load your second file (File -> Append AVI segment...)
    - Choose 'Direct Stream Copy' in the Video menu
    - Choose 'Direct Stream Copy' & 'Source Audio' in the Audio menu
    - Choose 'Save as' from the File menu and save the file with a new name.

    That's not a joke

If you really want a video editor that will provide a lossless encoding, you should use any GUI that uses h264 codes and capable to make B frame .

Gordianknot, AutoGK, VirtualDubMod, Handbrake, megui, avidemux, etc are just different GUIs, not mot than that . They all are based on h264 .
