Sorry, i tried restoring it but only went back to the start of the problem, and the only restore point left is from when i purchased my laptop 2-3 years ago.
Surprising. How can that be?
Now this specific problem has been widely reported by many. If you google you will find them. Many solutions have been suggested. Some worked for some and didn't for many. On the whole there is no clear-cut definitive single solution for it. The picture only gets more and more confusing.
I have been very reluctant to put out this drastic solution, but I think now it is time, since no other solution has emerged.
Back up all your important data and restore it to the original condition. Having spent two to three years, this will also help you to weed out unnecessary muck you have put in. As a matter of fact, many routinely reinstall the OS periodically for this weeding out operation.
Take your time, give it a thought. Also wait for other experts here to give their thoughts on this solution before going ahead. Good luck.

I have thought about that and figured it would be my last resort, but i'll give it a few weeks and see if a better solution comes out.
I would keep a watch on reports that a Windows update broke something related to your issue. Sometimes a fix for the fix gets issued or there's a work-around posted.
In the mean time there are plenty of players that are self-contained.
