Hello folkes
Most interesting but if WMP 12 is so great, how do I humbly get its' lordship to play .mpg files? Any insight would be appreciated.

Well I agree and you are right about that.
However, this is a fresh copy of Win 7 x64 with 12gig ram and the latest NVIDIA graphics card and out of the box Windows did play .mpg files after the initial load. Then I downloaded the Windows MS updates and now when you see an .mpg file it shows a thumbnail and no video is displayed when the file is played. This is all MS software and it happened right after I updated Win 7 - nothing else was loaded. So MS is killing it - preventing it from playing the video. At least that is my humble opinion based on what I have experienced.
Any thoughts, suggestions, whatever, I am more than open.
Thanks

I have several Win7 systems and they are all up-to-date - and I do not have this problem. And I also have not seen any complaints from other people.
So my thought is that one of the updates has a conflict with something that is peculiar to your system. But that will be a tough one to find.
If you have the patience, you can uninstall all the updates from when the problem started - easiest by going back to a restore point from that time. Then when they come back, install them one by one and check for the problem until you find the culprit.
I am having problems with MPG too. Audio works, but no video with WMP12. I don't know when this started, but it used to work fine. I can play them with RealPlayer or Quicktime or WMP in XP Mode.
Are you now, or have you ever used a codec pack?
If so, which one?
If not, try this:
CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack
cccp is fine if you're willing to use the player they install along with the pack. If you want to use Windows Media Player or Media Center you will need a pack specifically written for use by the Windows players. For full support of the Windows players, use the Win7codecs.
I did a repair install and updated everything. Problem solved. No 3rd party codecs.
