Unable to play audio files, unable to hear audio from video files

I just defragmented both c: and d: drives. D: is where I keep all my media. After defragmentation, both itunes and mediamonkey are completely unable to play audio files, and VLC can play video but there is no sound. Internet streaming plays as normal. Have I just destroyed my entire media collection by defragmenting with window 7's own utility?

Thanks for the reply. I ran the system file checker. It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." I am still unable to play audio files :S

Do you have a valid Windows 7 installation disc? You might consider a repair install, after backing up your data.

I use Windows Defrag and Media Monkey---never heard of this type of issue.

Can you play audio files with ANY app?

Do you show any errors regarding sound in Device Manager or any sound-related control panel tab?

    Can you record sound?

Do you hear sound when going to Youtube and listening to a random posting?

Windows media player, itunes, mediamonkey are all unable to play any file. When I press "play" mediamonkey and Quick time both stay stuck at 0:00, itunes freezes, and WMP comes up with an error that says "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

My laptop (which I ordered from Amazon 2 months ago) did not come with a windows 7 disk.

When I click on "Manage Audio Devices" in control panel it comes up with an error "Windows has detected that audio enhancements for the following devices are causing problems: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio). Would you like to disable Driver Enhancements for this device?"

Sites like YouTube work perfectly fine :/

If it matters, I also ran the registry cleaner in ccleaner before defragmenting. I read somewhere cleaning the registry can create problems.

That's true, but I wouldn't assume it fouled you up.

I'd do a system restore as advised. That's the quickest way to get an earlier registry back.

If that fails, then I would look to uninstall and reinstalling any and all audio drivers you may have.

You can download a legit Windows 7 ISO that you can burn to disk and then use to do a complete fresh clean install when and if needed. You would use your existing Product Key to activate any such clean install.

    This worked perfectly.
