    Do I need VLC?

So far the pre-installed version of windows media player on my new vaio has catered for all my film needs. Haven't tried every type of video file yet though.

You don't need it but it is nice to have. it can play more file types than WMP including FLV and doesn't require extra codecs to do it.

yeah u'll need VLC if you want to play other video formats... still WMP will play all other video formats using codec packs like; Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs or other similar codecs that supports it
    but VLC will do

If you want to play just about any video and audio file format without extra codecs then yes but as pointed out above you can get a similar result with a codec pack. Why don't you try it and see if you like it? If you don't you can just uninstall it.

Oh I use it on my Mac, it's a great and vital piece of software for OSX. Just if I can avoid installing third party apps then I will, what about these codecs then can I manually add the necessary stuff to WMP and basically get it to do the same thing?

I've never needed to use a codec pack myself so others will have to comment on how good they are.

It's up to you. If you encounter a format that won't play, you've got choices

They work, but for sheer ease of use, VLC is the way to go.
