This photo cannot be saved. Problem with file properties

My sister sends me jpeg photos from her phone as attachments in gmail. In the email, the preview pic looks normal. When I click View, the pic is enlarged, but flipped 90 degrees. If I download the pic, it's flipped 90 degrees. If I open the pic in windows live photo gallery, I can rotate it, but will get a bunch of pop up error messages saying This photo cannot be saved because of a problem with the photo's file properties. Then it says there's a problem with windows live photo gallery and shuts down. This pic flipping in gmail started about a week ago. Previously her pics displayed correctly. She says she's doing nothing out of the ordinary. I just tried loading the photo into MsPaint. I was able to rotate it and save it. So, i just solved my problem, but wonder why windows live photo gallery won't let me do this.

If there's nothing too personal in one of those pictures from your sister that you've had a problem with, if you upload it here as an attachment we could download it and investigate for ourselves. Might be able to come up with an answer.

But lacking that, it's a bit hard to speculate on exactly what might be happening with your previously no-problem procedures that suddenly are problematic.

I've been experimenting, and have found that I can rotate some of the gmail pics in windows live photo gallery. So there's that. I uploaded a problem photo to this thread, then right clicked the uploaded photo as save as. I then went to the photo location on my hard drive and was able to rotate it normally. So I deleted the photo from this thread, as you would get no error messages if you tried to rotate it. Weird. Then I googled the error message and found this thread:

They talk about using Paint to rotate their flipped pics. As long as I can do that, I'm good.
