Problem with PC monitor after using another monitor

Hooked up my Dell XPS9000 to my HDTV to use the TVs 60" monitor

hookup was by hdmi cable from the PC's ATI 5450 video card to the TVs hdmi in.

Later in the day when I booted up my PC there was no image on the monitor, it was black. In order to get my PCs monitor to display I had to unplug the hdmi cable from the ATIs hdmi out port.

I have googled this problem but couldn't find a solution. Any suggestions on how to solve this annoyance??

    Thanks for your help!

Have you defined your new 2-monitor setup (one for the PC monitor itself, and a second for the HDTV) as an "extended desktop"? Then one of the monitors becomes #1 and the second becomes #2. Catalyst Control Center can be used to configure your dual-monitor setup, and which is "primary" (i.e. #1), etc.

With a 2-monitor setup you can run "extended desktop" (i.e. double-width desktop, and windows can be dragged around from one monitor to the other) or "clone mode" (duplicate output from monitor #1 sent simultaneously to monitor #2). This is up to you.

In the absence of proper dual-monitor configuration setup , I'm not surprised there would be at least some confusion (e.g. if the HDMI cable is plugged in to PC and HDTV, but the HDTV is powered off).

What have you done so far (if anything) in the way of additional CCC "dual-monitor" configuration, in support of adding HDMI-to-HDTV output from your HD5450?

    Thank you for your response
I am having difficulty accomplishing any configuration of the two monitors.
I find myself to be in a frustrating situation.

Firstly, when I connect the hdmi cable to my video card, my desktop displays only the photo on my desktop and I lose all the control on the desktop the mouse stops and the control panel disappears, so i lose the ability to extend and configure the two monitors. When i unplug the hdmi cable from the video card full control returns to the dektop, but I can't configure the second monitor

Is it maybe not possible to use hdmi in a dual monitor setup by design for some reason???
