    Adding subtitles to Mp4

    Hi Guys

Anyone know of a good program to add subtitles (.srt files) to Mp4 Movies preferably without having to re-encode the whole movie as I don't want to mess with the quality of the film.

Not sure if that can be added without re-encoding, Danny, but using VLC you can do a workaround. I think you definitely know it .... when the video is running go to Video> Subtitle Track> Open File .... browse to the subtitle and open it.

    Thanks Archie

I think you are kind of right. The problem is I can't use vlc as they are to be streamed over wifi to my Tv. There is a way to soft encode them without having to re-encode but the Tv does not recognise them. Can you recommend a software to add and re-encode them without loosing to much quality. They are Mp4 format which I need to keep so its almost a pass through as for as the container is concerned

HandBrake does the job the best. If you use it in default settings, it does not alter the source quality at all.

First, select the video file to be encoded ....
    Adding subtitles to Mp4-1.jpg

Then select the destination of the encoded file, and the file type (mp4 or mkv)
    Adding subtitles to Mp4-2.jpg

In the video tab, check that it is in default settings.
    Adding subtitles to Mp4-3.jpg

    Add the subtitle there....
    Adding subtitles to Mp4-4.jpg

    Click start to start encoding.
    Adding subtitles to Mp4-5.jpg

It will take a fair time to be completed ..... as it does not loss the quality. At the end, you will be happy with the output :)

Are you sure just renaming the srt file with the same name as the movie name doesn't do the job, except for the extension part of course?

it may be possible to transcode on the fly depending on the media server you use.
apparently there is a free one that does it...

PS3 Media Server • View topic - PS3 Media Server 1.80.0 is released

i have no experience with any of this though danny as i dont have a smart tv.
have a tinker and see if you get any joy with it.
