Can't embed subtitles with Handbrake

I'm trying to embed English subtitles into a few VOB files. I've done this successfully a few times but more often then not it fails. When I open the mp4 there are no subtitles. On the Subtitles tab of Handbrake, it detects the correct English (VobSub). I check Forced, Burn and Default but after the conversion, the subtitles are not there (doesn't work if these selections are unchecked).

Note: My source files, all VOBs, do not contain an SRT file.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Burt
I don't use Handbrake but is i not the case that if you haven't got the SRT file Handbrake wont create one! Have you, in the past created your own subtitles. I use Video Studio editor and can create subtitles from scratch in that!
