Can't view or edit mp3 tags in explorer

I am new to Windows 7, but have been using Windows for many years. I have researched other threads on this issue, but nothing has resolved the problem for me. All my MP3 files are tagged and I can see the data in iTunes and in Windows Explorer on my Vista PC, but in Windows 7 Explorer, all I see is the file name - no Artist, Album, Track, etc. If I try to enter data at the bottom of the explorer window I get an error, 0x8007007e, when I click Save. Has anyone figured out what the cause of this problem is?

ID3Kill

I've experienced this problem.
It is due to the tag version that is used on the mp3 files.

When this happens to me I use a program called "ID3Kill" to delete the tag info and then I (manually) replace the info.
Don't let WMP 12 replace the info!

Here is a link:
ID3KILL - Download

I'm not sure what effect deleting the tag info will have on iTunes though (it might "spit the dummy").

Thanks for info, but all my tags are v2.3 and according to other posts this version is supported in Windows 7. I did stumble across a solution (or workaround). I am using an older version of dbPoweramp on my Vista machine and it integrates with Explorer to provide tag editing when you right click on a MP3 file. I downloaded the new version of dbPoweramp, installed it on the Windows 7 PC and all the tag data showed up and was editable in Explorer. I have no idea why, but it works.

I regularly download (legal) albums from Frostclick.com and often the tag files can't be edited in Windows Explorer.
In those cases I use ID3Kill to deal with the problem.

The v2.3 tags should work OK, but the v2.4 tags cause problems.

Hopefully your problem is fixed now. :)

Thanks for your help. I'm still curious as to why Explorer itself will not display the metadata for MP3 files without the addition of some third party software. Has anyone heard of a reason why Explorer behaves this way? Any insight would be appreciated. If I do not hear anything, I will mark this as solved. Thanks.

Im sorry for replying to this very old thread but I actually found a perfect solution to this issue which really WORKS....

You need to actually install a small plugin called Audioshell

ID3 tag editor - AudioShell freeware music files tag editor - direct tag editing from Windows Vista/7/8 Explorer

Its a small software which perfectly works after installing and rebooting...It doesnt run in the background or anything..

This is the only solution which works after trying everything on the internet...Give it a try if you still face the issue...

Usually when I click on a mp3 file it will show all the informations about that file in the bottom of the folder and I can edit them, like album, contributing artists, and track number. But recently when I clicked on them there are no in tags for me to view. I have k-lite codec pack 10.3.7...

Can't edit mp3 tags in explorer pane
I can't enter the tags and all I have is the title of the mp3 showing. Something makes me think it has to do with the tag editor I used and maybe not though. I'm using Win7 Home premium. It seems like there is something in the registry blocking modification. I hate to lose all the mp3s that want...
