Is there an easy way of managing pictures


I have thousands of photos that we have collected and backed up over the years and I am looking for a good way or solution to manage them. The thing I worry about I'd duplicates, then are bound of he loads in various directories etc and I need to "trim the fat"

Can anyone offer some guidance please?
