I use Windows Media Player for one reason. It plays everything I ask it to play. Maybe I'm not asking enough.

how did you get the colored meter.
Go to where your skin file is installed.
On my PC it is here:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\Skins\PJL_WMP11
You should see a bunch of png files.
    There should be:

    • beat_left.png
    • beat_right.png

You can edit those files (back up the originals).
Here are the ones I made:

there is a nice red one. you need the essentials pack to use the file icons

Winamp Essentials Pack v5.64 - Winamp
its really handy ,you can have a continue where you last stopped winamp.
    Thanks for those links.

If wmp hadn't hidden the equalizer I suppose it would be okay.
After a fresh install wmp works allot better but the painful navigation to the equalizer pretty much kills ease of use for me anyway ?
When iTunes has a better display wmp is in the wrong direction
I haven't re-installed vlc because wmp started playing my videos so that's good enough for me/ and iTunes always plays music pretty good.
Although I don't burn so there is the un-known factor lurking.

Mine doesn't have any colour themes.
    Maybe it's too old.

I'm one who feels WMP drools, not rules. VLC runs circles around the clunky P.O.S. although for music, I use Media Monkey both to manage the music and to play it.

+1 on that I only use media center for live TV everything else VLC

WMP was cool back in the day when your choices were limited now shoot WMP took a backseat to more less resource hungry and better extensions all the way around
