.file to mp4 or avi or mpg

I have a movie I got from a friend and the file extension is .file I was wondering if there is a software out there to convert it from the .file extension to .mp4, .avi , .mpg or other movie formats I can view the movie on vlc media player which works fine but want to be able to watch it on my dvd player or ps3.
    thanks :)

Mediainfo is what everyone uses for video/audio codec info. It's good to have and free, even if you don't need it for this particular vid.

On first run you have to select the type of display for the information. I use "sheet". Then there is a setting to enable Explorer Context Menu integration. Enable that. Once that's done you can right clcik on any media file or folder and it will display the media info for the file(s).

The author is available to answer questions on sourceforge.net
See the forums for the program on source forge.

I know this is an old post, but I came across it while trying to find an answer myself. So if anyone happens to do the same, here's how to fix it:

Right-click the .file video, click on properties, and rename it to [any name].mp4

The ".file" just means that it doesn't have an extension, so if you know what the file actually is (mp4, avi, etc.) all you have to do to fix it is add the ".[file type here]" to the name. If you want to convert it after, you can just use any vid conversion program.
