Windows 7 will not see my camera

    I have a Dell optiplex 380 64 bit and Windows 7 professional.
It won't see my Vivitar digital camera when I hook up
the camera with a usb cable.

When I started having trouble someone suggested I delete
the driver for portable device in the device manager. I did that
and now there is no portable device in the device manager.

Now when I hook up the camera, Windows 7 seems to see
there is something because in the usb part of the device manager
a note will pop up saying there is now a mass storage device.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi wilmath,

    Welcome to Seven forums.

If it was working fine earlier you should perform a system restore:

    System Restore

Make sure chipset drivers are updated on the system:

    Updating Dell Drivers

Also, post a screenshot for the device manager so we can check the same and advise further:

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

    Click Start and Computer,
If Windows shows a new drive letter or mass storage device what happens if you right click the new device and click on Open ?
When was the last time you shut down the machine ?
    Shut down,
Restart the machine and plug the device in as soon as you login.
Make sure the device is powered on and the device if it has a upload switch make sure it's dial is in the correct position.

Thanks for the suggestions. I cannot reinstall the driver because it is an old camera and vivitar is
    no longer suppporting it.

I turn off my computer every night but I tried restarting and hooking up the camera after I log on.
When I do this the computer recognises new hardware and makes a noise and
the mass storage device shows up in the device manager.

When I tried right clicking the mass storage device in the device manager the only options
I had was properties or update the driver. I tried updating the driver but it didn't help.

Sandee, I have tried system restore, maybe I didn't go back far enough and went to
Dells site to update the drivers. However, there are several drivers for this. Should I
    download and install them all?

This is an ancient camera by digital camera standards so I am not going to worry too much
about it. I bought a sd card reader from ebay and as soon as that gets here I will try that.

    Thanks again for everybody's help!

Yes if the computer does not have a sd card reader that would be your only option to purchase or borrow one to retrieve the files with,
    It happens,
    Cheers.

    Hi wilmath,

You can try updating the chipset driver from the link given earlier. Also, having an SD card reader would be better option. As you can easily connect the card reader and transfer all your photographs.
