Just installed it and it works... You should know though that the thing adds everything that was ripped out in the first place (Media Player, DVD Maker, Media Center). There is no way to only install the WM codecs (which is what I personally was looking for, I don't want the rest of the crap)

Did you check the smaller download?

*Download size depends on selected download components.

I have the same problem and have been messing with it for 3 days. It all seems related to the fact that you cannot install Windows Media Foundation (which contains the required codecs to play WMV and WMA and so on).

This morning I found the following:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...c-a6cef9b414c4

It was just released yesterday. I can only assume that a whole lot of people were complaining.

I myself just wanted to have a system without WMP interfering with everything, not a windows that is crippled by removing support for pretty much any media format except for WAVs....

Edit: I suppose it will work, am still downloading it myself, but because this forum/topic helped me on my quest I though I'd share
THANK YOU BLIZZ! Solved my problem! I figured I wasn' the only one out there... Much appreciated!

    Some extra info:
After you install the update, you have the "Media Features" in the "Windows Features" list.
(Which you can find in the Uninstall Window -> Turn Windows features on or off).
You can uncheck DVD Make, Media Center and Media Player there and it will remove them.

As long as you don't uncheck the "Media Features" itself it will leave the codecs in place!

Before you try a re-install try a start-up repair - it may save a bit of time

I forgot to add.. no matter what i did it would not let me install windows 7 using my laptop. This whole issue happened after i was writing notes in class, and windows notified me about my battery being critical, so i saved my documents and it shut down, never to turn on again...
