Copy a movie DVD to laptop
I purchased a DVD and I want to copy this DVD to the hard drive of my laptop computer. Is there an easy way to do this? I have Windows 7 OS with sufficient free space on my drive.

I use this to back up all my Daughters Disney movies it's a great program it's called 123DVD
It has a trial right now if you decide to purchase later on it's about $29.00 US
It even records from Youtube Download DVD Copy Software Free Trials | 123 Copy DVD - Trials Enjoy and Goodluck
Just download Handbreak. It will do that for free.
DVDShrink still works for most movies. DVDFab Decrypter cracks those which DVDShrink chokes on. Both are free.
After looking at the reviews for Handbreak and some of the other programs, there is no easy way. At least not as easy as burning a CD to your computer hard drive or Ipod using itunes.
I use DVDCatalyst. It does the job for me and it cost only $10. The dev is very helpful as well. When I had trouble copying one of my DVDs, I sent an email that was promptly (within an hour) responded to with the exact info I needed to copy the DVD.
O.K. Solarstarshines I will try 123 Copy DVD
What I didn't realize until later, making a copy of any commercial DVD to your hard drive is illegal. I suppose you can copy a home made DVD of your home movies
Hi there
Please DO TRY AND TEST stuff before posting.
HANDBRAKE will NOT rip commercial encrypted DVD's properly -- you can rip them but they won't be viewable !!! --you need to use OTHER software to remove regionalization / encryption from them FIRST and THEN use Handbrake.
This method *might* work for getting Handbrake to rip encrypted commercial DVD's -- but I haven't tested it and it might be "over the top" for what the OP wanted. It won't work for Blu Rays though as encryption system is different.

To get your "Base" ISO you need to use other software -- I like AnyDVD (again it's not free) but works and with Blu RAY DVD's too.
Once you've got the DVD with the encryption and region code removed -- THEN you can use handbrake to read the VIDEO-TS folder and convert the movie into the format to mkv/mp4 or whatever you want -- it's not the simplest program but you can make very good quality ripped mkv/mp4 files at considerably smaller size than the original DVD.
Note - Handbrake also makes it easy to copy multiple subtitles and audio tracks which some people might find useful -- most of the other ripping programs don't seem to handle more than ONE subtrack file -- such as Winx DVD (paid for software).
The "All in one" rippers like Winx DVD have too many restrictions in that copying multiple languages / soundtracks etc makes them IMO not the best tool for the job.
That's why I like AnyDVD to make the "Clean" ISO (W8 / Linux can play these direct from HDD using a player like VLC - free- without needing Virtual DVD mounting) -- and you have a 100% archive copy of the original DVD minus all the DRM crud -- with menus etc etc. THEN you can process this to rip to formats you want --although a two stage process IMO that's the best solution -- proper DVD archive and also a set of mp4/mkv video files that can be played anywhere and streamed as well)
@muskrat -- it's 100% LEGAL to make backup copies of DVD's etc for HOME USE (no pirating !!) - and if the only way to do that is to remove the DRM crud then so be it.
In any case if I PAY for a DVD I should be able to view it on whatever device I have be it a laptop / TV /phone / tablet etc.
You don't buy a BOOK for example with the condition that you can't read it in Bed or sitting on "the bog".
Similarly you don't buy a car with the condition you can only fill it up at a particular Gas station or you can't use it on a freeway.
Cheers
