    Power Director Keeps Crashing

I purchased my computer new in June of 2010. It's an HP Compaq. Anyway, it came with quite a few programs/packages already installed and one of them is Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe. I recently bought a camcorder and intended on making some videos, so, I was looking for a way to edit them. I thought that before downloading editing software, I would look through my computer to see if there was already something that I could use. To my surprise, I found Power Director 7. ( There are actually quite a few programs in the start up menu that I have still never used.) Apparently it is a free version, there is another window that prompts me to buy it.

The first time that I used Power Director 7 I had no problem. However, I did find that I couldn't import any of the video clips that I had uploaded from my camcorder. Power Director couldn't even find them in my computer. It was able to import still photos that came from the camcorder. The still photos are jpg. It turns out that the video clips from the camcorder are .mov and Power Director 7, or at least this version, won't recognize them.

So, using Power Director, I made a couple of slideshow type "videos" from the still photos, added a music track, kept a copy of the file and uploaded the video to Youtube. By the time I was making the second video, Power Director had already started crashing, freezing up, not responding and seemed to be getting progressively worse. I would lose my work and have to go back and start over again. I finally did manage to edit and make my video.

Meanwhile, I still wanted to import the video clips from my camcorder into Power Director, so that I could edit them and produce another video. I went online to find a video converter and ended up downloading Format Factory. I tried converting the .mov clips to .avi and it seemed to work fine. When I viewed the converted clip I had good quality full screen video and good quality audio. However, when I imported the clip into Power Director 7, the video was no longer full screen, but instead was just a smaller picture in the center of the screen. Also, the audio was "breaking up".

I decided to try converting the .mov camcorder video to .wmv. This time, when I imported the clips into Power Director, I had full screen video and the audio quality seemed good too, except that there was a horrible noise in the last couple of seconds of the clip, a kind of a loud, broken hum. This noise appears to be a problem with the conversion, because I went back and played the converted clip and the same noise was there at the end of the clip too.

Needless to say that at this point I'm starting to get frustrated, so again using Format Factory, I tried converting an .mov clip to .mp4. I played the converted clip and all seemed well. So, I imported the .mp4 clip into Power Director. I was able to play the clip and everything appeared to be fine. I was also satisfied with video and audio quality. Finally, I thought, I can make my video! I imported some still photos (.jpg) that I wanted to use along with the video clips. So far, so good, but when I went back to import another video clip, Power Director crashed.

I tried again. I imported a video clip, but when I tried to import a second clip, Power Director crashed again. I tried again with the same results. I can import the first clip, but when I try to import a second clip, or try to do anything else for that matter, it crashes. I keep getting a little window that basically says " The program has stopped working", "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" and "the program is not responding".

    Thanks in advance

First off it would be helpful to see your full system specs as I see your PC is 4 years old and video editing is one of the most power hungry operations most of us come across. Follow this tutorial to see how to go about it:
System Info - See Your System Specs
As a general rule it is always best to avoid conversion of video clips if at all possible as every time you convert you loose quality. Depending how much video editing you might want to do it might be best if you considered a paid for Program. Not sure f I am allowed to mention a paid for program by name but if you are interested I will send you a PM. The one I would recommend will cost you $85!

I'm always interested in other software options, paid or free. Members have the choice to purchase it or not. I suppose the only rule that might be broken would be if you were the developer promoting your product.

I suggest that after Leo updates his SF profile System Specs, that he check Hpq for any Cyberlink Power Director updates. We can help if we know the details about his machine.

I recently checked for my system and there was at least one new version, perhaps two. Unfortunately I could not install it because it's bundled with HP Windows. I did a few Clean Installs and I lost whatever ties Cyberlink to HP machines - the install kept telling me that this was not an HP disk.

If you would care to upload one of your .mov clips to something like Drop Box and send me a PM with the link I would be happy to see if the video editor I use will open it and allow normal editing!

Thanks again for your help, everyone. I didn't find the problem, but I guess I'm going to mark this one solved anyway. I've since downloaded VSDC Free Video Editor and have been using it successfully.

Hi everyone, I have cyberlink power director 11. This is the worst program I have ever had to use, program is very slow and keeps crashing. I have the latest and greatest computer and installed the (hard copy) cd program and still the same problems persist as my old computer. It should not have to be so difficult to transfer your videos to cds. I would never recommend or use this program again. It's a joke. The worst is waiting 30 minutes for a 30 minute video to preview and then could/would crash at any time.
