How to compress a DVD movie into a smaller file

I own a number of movies which are burned to my external hard drive. They are about 4.2 GB. I would like to shrink these down so I can put them on an Ipad and play them with a VLC player app.

Any idea how I would do this?

    Thank you.

    VLC Transcoding

VLC (desktop program) can transcode videos into a different format and/or size.

See if you can follow my instruction document.I created it to remind me how to hardsub videos.
If you need to add subtitles, you will need to extract them from the DVD or try to download them.
If you don't need subtitles, you can leave that option unchecked.

The VLC developers have a track record of releasing updates that break functions.
I'm using v2.08, because all of the releases I've tried since have had transcoding issues.

    Note:

    I haven't tried transcoding using v2.15 though. :)
