How to recover my files?

This popped up on my computer and I don't know what it means. I have an anti virus shield so how could a virus get through? It also wants me to pay to get them back? Please help me. I've tried system restore and still nothing.

Only pay if the files are VERY important and you can't live without it.. Good luck.

Atleast in future, backup backup and backup and save yourself from this agony.

Note: Do not leave the external drive on which you backup always connected. Connect only when you want to take a backup and then unplug it safely. Never all-the-time-connected. ( I do it all the times without exception - though my files are not that worthy anyway.:))
