Unable to access Itunes after downloading a previous version

Hi, as my user name suggest, I am not tech savvy at all
My problem is: Using a desk top computer, the other day I downloaded and updated my usual itunes program, and since then my ipod and ipad won't work at all, all I get on the screen is a picture of a USB cable and an arrow pointing to a blue itunes logo.

Message coming up on the computer kept on saying that it was unable to update the device and that it needed to be restored, when I tried that, it would get half way through and then say unable to restore due to error.

so today I uninstalled the latest itunes and related programs and reinstalled an older version 11.4, which is what I had previously and had no issues with. All downloaded well and the blue itunes logo was back instead of the red one, and I thought YES!! but just now I tried to open itunes and this message appeared -

The file 'itunesLibrary.itl' cannot be read because it was created by an newer version of iTunes. Can someone please help me get Itunes back up and running again? Preferably in simple language.

Sorry this is such a long story. any help would be most appreciated - I miss my music

    Hi,
The fun part about iTunes is it needs to be updated on all devices so the app on the ipad would need to be updated as well,
Don't believe you can use a prior version of iTunes please update it,
    Cheers.
