Can I extract segments from a home-made DVD?

Hi,

I have a DVD of, let's say, my friends and I singing several songs. I can view the DVD on my computer.

QUESTION: Can I extract a short segment, let's say one song, from that DVD, and turn it into just an audio file? So that I can email just the audio file to someone? I don't need them to see it, just hear it.

If this is possible, could you please give me step by step instructions? I'm not the most computer savvy person!

If stereo mix is available under recording devices (R-click speaker icon), it's probably easiest to play the DVD and 'record what you hear' using free Audacity (you'll need to also download the LAME mp3 encoder on the same page).

When playing the DVD, there should be an audio signal level - see pic



stereo mix is often hidden, or not present on some pc's, but if you have it - Audacity can record the signal see pic



then go File > Export audio and save as mp3



if your pc doesn't support stereo mix, then you'll have to rip the DVD and extract the audio
