Windows Media Player for the files it will play.

VLC, installed at defaults, will pick up any file types WMP can't play.

QuickTime Player regrettably must be installed too or IPhone pics and videos will display sideways. But at defaults it should not bother any of the other formats. Just keep it out of startup.

VLC for video. If I can't play a file using VLC (it does happen sometimes) then I use Splayer Portable (English version) or LightAlloy Portable, both offer far better playback quality than VLC.

VLC is my default player though. I still prefer a couple of different players for audio files rather than use a "one player that does it all" approach.

VLC is the best! The others can imitate but never duplicate.

I repeat... give PotPlayer a try. I much prefer it to VLC.

I use Winamp for music, and PotPlayer for video of all types.

Just installed PotPlayer after you suggested it. Installed as non-default video player but it seems very likely that I'll ditch VLC and use this instead. I've had problems in the past with keeping the 64bit version of VLC up to date.
