DVD playback freezes

Hi,

since I changed from Win XP to Win 7 I encounter freezing during playback of DVD's. I tested several DVD's and the problem occurs with both WMP and PowerDVD 6 as well as PowerDVD 9. The only difference between PowerDVD 6 and WMP is that the former freezes every 5 minutes for approximately 5 seconds whereas WMP freezes every 2 to 3 minutes for 10 minutes. So, the latter is useless at all.
My graphics card driver is up to date. I deactivated hardware acceleration in PowerDVD. I would be grateful for further suggestions as I would like to keep Win 7.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to seven forums

win 7 and Power dvd 6 have problems. I would think that given is PDVD6 , and 9, and WMP that it is more than that. can you go to search and type event viewer. go to the windows log>apllication tabs. Look for errors (they have red in the left hand column) that conatin app hang, app crash, or anything relating to PDVD or WMP. there will be tons of them when you find the most frequent or relevant ones note the event ID and source code and let us know

Do other types of Media freeze? Sounds like your DVD player and Win7 may not be getting along

Dear all,

thanks for your answers and please excuse the delay.

@zigzag3143

I had a look at event viewer and I found only very few errors at all. None of them were related to the DVD playback and they were in particular not occurring at the time the DVD was played.

I had another test which might enlighten the problem: I first tried to play a video (avi) from dvd which let to the above mentioned freezing. Then I copied the file to the hard disc and here no freezing occurred during playback. This suggests problems with the DVD-Drive. However, I think it can not be a hardware problem, as under Win XP no such freezing occurs. And I even had to go back to Win XP in order to have a productive system again. As far as I understood for DVD-Drives no driver is needed which rules out an inappropriate driver as the source.

For further test I can start the Win7 system again as it is still on another hard disc. However it might take me some time.

Cheers

Hard to know if you have exactly the same system the thread starter has.

Do you have Shark007's codecs installed? Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs

Also, if you look in event viewer, what is the error you get when your computer freezes? Just type eventvwr in the 'start search box', then click on the icon

Hi
Thanks for your reply
I have downloaded and installed the codecs you mentioned - but if anything the problem is now worse. I have also checked the event log and there is nothing there relating to either the optical drive nor WMP or media centre
I do not know how to display my system specs other than it is a samsung x60 plus running windows 7 pro. intel core 2 cpu T7200 @ 2.00 ghz. 3 g of RAM 32 bit operating system. it has ATI mobility Radeon x1700 graphics card.

any further help would be much appreciated.

Run a PC Pitstop test ... it's free. When it it finished, it will give you information about your machine ... especially if you need to update any drivers.

Hi
Thank you for your reply. I have run pcpitstop as you suggested - PC Pitstop OverDrive Tests Overview

apart from suggesting disk defrag (which I have done twice in the last hour) and clearing temporary files (also done) there are no reported problems.
however it hasn't fixed the problem.

there are no errors in the event log. I have reinstalled the codecs you recommended. still no further forward. I get about 3 minutes of playing time then the whole thing locks up.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thank you

I have just purchased a new Dell XPS16 laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate and have found that DVD's are freezing. My laptop came with PowerDVD Dx which I am using to play the the DVD's and it appears to be that the DVD is being buffered to the HDD and then not clearing out when it fills the cache. I believe that this was happening because i saw the HDD light flashing slowly and then it got faster and faster until the light was on constantly - then the DVD froze and the HDD went mad and played for around 30 seconds and froze again (at this point the HDD light was constantly on).

If as if the HDD is not clearing out its buffer and I do not know if that is an issue of PowerDVD or how windows handles buffering of the drive.

I am wonderring if there is a setting to handle the DVD buffering or not

Any comments would be gratefully recieved.
