CD Burning Software Can't Add Music Files To Compilation To Burn CDs

    Hi.....happy to be here.

Let me first say what this problem is NOT. My cd/dvd burner WORKS. I can burn dvds using clone dvd and others. I can import dvds and cds to my computer and play them, edit them, etc etc. I have not installed any new hardware or even software that I know of with the exception of an avg update (as avg is the only anti-virus i run). Ok. I use cdburner xp to burn cds (audio or data compilations). Occasionally I will use Ashampoo as well. Well all of a sudden one day (a week ago) I burned a cd in cdburner xp and it worked great as usual. Then when I went back to burn another, i can see no files to add to the compilation. In the left hand side you can see all my drives and folders that contain the files. I can also play, access, edit etc all these files in other programs and players. But in the right hand side of the burning software no files will come up when i click on a folder. SAME THING happens in Ashampoo. Basically the only thing wrong here is that I can't add files to burn cds. I don't get it. Again, I can see the drive and burn dvds....there is nothing wrong with my drive itself. I feel pretty sure I could burn cds too if I could get my files added to be burned! I don't get it. I tried to do a system restore (which I'd never done before with this laptop) but I can't because I hadn't created a restore point. I thought these were created automatically. I'm running windows 7 home prem on an asus laptop 64bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this is a common thread. I searched and searched and found many that had burner problems and registry etc but none that were exactly like mine. I repeat....there is nothing wrong with my cd/dvd drive. Thanks much!

I used to use Nero Express and OEM Nero 6 to make combo CDs, which contain both a data section and a music section. Thus in a regular audio cd player the music plays, and in a computer, the cd can be searched for either data or music. Is that what you've been doing? I just want to make sure I understand. If I understood correctly, let us know, a few of us may be able to help you resolve this.

    Thanks for the reply.

Mainly what I do on my laptop is burn vinyl, edit in wavelab, etc etc. I don't burn cds a ton but of course I do it from time to time and I burn dvds quite a bit. As I said before I can still burn dvds all day long......no issue. What happens is when I open any cd burning software (data or music), it will NOT see all my files. For instance, I hit "open" then the program (cdburnerxp) opens up a window so I can see my files and I can choose what I want to add to the compilation and burn it. I've tried data and audio options. When I have selected what files I want to add to my compilation, I hit okay and nothing happens. It will not let me drag, import, add ANY files to the compilation (data or audio or any for that matter). This just happened all of a sudden. It's possible that I accidentally hit a button or something but not likely. All I know is I have burned many cds and never had this problem. My only problem is I can't compile a cd to be burned. It wont let me add the files. I also tried ashampoo cd burning and it gave me an error message saying the files can't be added to the compilation. Yet, I can burn dvds in clone dvd so it can't be the burner. The burner itself is fine. I just don't understand why it wont let me add files to be burned. I can open these same files in other programs and edit them, play them or anything. Just can't add them to be burned. Again, I am not trying to do anything fancy like burn multisession discs or adding files later.....nothing like that. When I try to add files to any type of cd to be burned I can't.....no matter what type of "data/music etc it is. Hope this clears things up. Thanks again.

    Problem resolved

I appreciate your fast reply and help!! Apparently it was just a setting within cdburner xp though i'm not even sure what I did. Funny how a setting in that program affected all the other cd burning programs I had too. Anyway, the problem thankfully is now fixed. Thanks again!!!

Can you share with us exactly what the wrong setting was, and what the right setting is? We can use that for future reference. Thanks!!

In the settings for cdburner xp there is an option to choose what type of files to accept to add to the cd compilation. My settings had it to accept only a weird file I hadn't even heard of. No idea how this had gotten changed as I had burned other cds that same day. I certainly hadn't changed it because I'd never been to those settings. Anyway, if anyone ever has this problem, make sure to check to see that settings haven't changed and to mark the option of adding any file type (or the file type you wish to add). Still interesting that this also happened in ashampoo on my cpu. Thanks again for all your help!!!
