Region 1 DVD in BD-ROM
I've been thinking of getting a Region 1 DVD, but I am not sure if it would work on my laptop. It has a BD-ROM drive, so could this override the region lock?

I have just one suggestion.
Convert your Region 1 DVD to ISO using the freeware BDlot DVD ISO Master BDlot DVD ISO Master - Best Choice to Decrypt and Backup DVD as ISO for Free!
You can play the ISO on your laptop with Virtual Clone Drive SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive
Or you can also burn the region-free ISO to a DVD media using the same BDlot ISO Master and play it with your BD ROM drive as well as in other hardware DVD Players.
( Check with applicable local laws on DVD/BD copying in your country. There was a proposal to amend the laws to make copying owned DVDs/BDs legal as long back as a year or so but I have not followed it up and so not sure whether the laws have already been amended.)
Using DVD Decrypter, I would imagine that you ended up with a fairly large file...yes? It should play okay, if left in that form on the hard drive, but it would be a lot more compact, and easier to burn to a DVD, if you now used DVD Shrink on it.
If you are happy with that size, that is all that matters, but if your video archive were as large as mine, every GB counts, and that is twice as large as it needs to be.
