    Yikes

WMP will not open from program menu or taskbar. Cannot get it work at all. How do I know if I have deleted/disabled it?

Here's where you can see if it's enabled or not:

Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows components on or off > Media Features > Windows Media Player

Yes, it's "checked". I am baffled as to why it no longer opens.

Eureka! It seems a "restart" has somehow solved everything.

    LOL!

Well, it wasn't the FIRST 'restart'.

I really like Windows 7. I bought my PC in Sept. and got the HP Win 7 upgrade. It arrived the first of Nov. and I hesitated because I was considering trying Ubuntu 9.10. But after reading a lot about issues with Ubuntu and my graphics card, I used the upgrade. Very pleased!

My interest is almost entirely in films, collecting and viewing. I use my 1TB SimpleServe and burn others. The Blu-ray on my PC is great, it compares well with the Sony I use for my HDTV. So, multimedia is important to me and I like WMP. I do have numerous others on my machine.

Any cool software that you know to enhance playback is always welcome info.

    Ok fair enough :)

I think the biggest playback enhancer is the screen you're viewing stuff on.

I like watching films on a nice monitor too. For my viewing and operating pleasure, I like to use Media Player Clasic Home Cinema (I like to update to latest beta version every couple of weeks or so as they are very stable) plus Shark007 Win 7 codecs, plus CoreAVC pro for H264 MP4s. (Core is the only one that costs any money.)

Sharks codes supply the latest and best codecs and come with a really easy to use settings app (see screenshot) that makes it super easy to tweak things. Plus it supports the CoreAVC codec.
