Viewed vids are splitting to jpg. "scenes" in my Pictures Folder

when I play downloaded video it splits into multiple pictures and they ALL end up in my Pictures folder. After viewing a 12 minute 360p video I need to delete about 8000 pics from the file. This just started happening on an older machine and I can't think of any changes I've made (intentionally) to cause this problem.

Each jpg file that ends up in my folder is named as a scene (example: scene 4313) my folders are set to show thumbnails... Thousands of thumbnails

What do you use to view video? VLC Medial Player?

Have you tried a different program than the one that causes your issue to view videos?

Where do you download the videos from?

Have you checked for malware on that machine?

You can view running processes in Task Manager.

Very popular, free program for all your photo, video, etc. is irfanview

The videos are from different sources. some from Face book some are sent by family via "wetransfer" ... some are just random sites that host home repair videos.

This may be relevant... The method of download ranges from a site download tab.... To ant video downloader... to Vid downloader pro (chrome add on), to a screen cap software called Bandi-cam.

I have been using all of these except wetransfer for a long time with no issues, but ALL methods have done this however, not all the time leading me to believe that only certain TYPES of files do this.

My MAIN source of video playback is VLC and I also like it's editing features (maybe I'm just used to it :))

I have not checked the task Mgr while playing a video. I'm not sure I would know if I was looking at a bad process if it was in the list but I would notice an extra application running, at most :)

NOTE: while typing this I realized that this also happens when playing files captured with the Bandicam screen recording software too. Those are not really "downloaded" in the true sense, if that helps troubleshoot the culprit. Thanks!

Note #2: I just played 2 avi files ... each on vlc. ONE split into pics and one did not... The videos were screen captured from the same website using the same capture software

VLC media player has a function that does exactly as you described.

I suspect this might be enabled:

Do you have the same unfortunate results with other players? Windows Media Player?

Here's a link to free media players.

Have you scanned your computer for malware?

Excellent free scanners for a variety of malware:
Malwarebytes running this should suffice for now
    SuperAntiSpyware
    Hitman Pro
    ADWCleaner

VLC media player has a newer version available for download, you might want to update it and see what happens or, probably better, uninstall, install updated version. If you have an option to delete custom/user settings, probably good idea. If you have custom/user setting, write them down or take a screenshot of the settings window when open or use Microsoft Snipping Tool to select just that window and save it.

I thought you nailed it with the VLC scene filter being enabled. After all, the pics were named "scenexxx" and that is exactly what was taking place. So, I happily navigated through the advanced VLC settings to uncheck the "scenes" box.... It was empty My next thought wast to just delete VLC and reinstall it in my machine in it's factory settings position.

Before doing this I used your Malwarebytes link, installed and ran the trial version. 13 threats found! I quarantined the items, restarted the computer again and..... PERFECT! I'll keep an eye on this, but so far it seems like I have my machine back :).

Thank you Snick, for your help and for your patience. It really is appreciated.
