windows media player 12 uses what video codecs ?

I usually play my 1080p HD videos with potplayer or kmplayer. potplayer is ok, maybe slight lag. kmplayer lags terribly, 720p is ok. thought the problem is because my computer is old. but then I used windows media player 12 to play the 1080p videos, and it plays them excellently with no noticeable lag and seemingly no picture quality reduction. so the problem must be due to the codecs. wmp12 uses what internal or system codecs for the videos / audios ? if it is system, thinking of using the same codecs for potplayer and kmplayer.

    using
    windows media player 12
shark007 advanced codecs 10.9.0 ( the only codecs pack installed )
    windows 7 ultimate service pack 1 32-bit
    core 2 duo E6300 4GB ram ( 3GB usable )

    Thanks.

There are a couple of options available.

[1] Download and use VLC Player for Windows => VLC Player. It pretty much plays anything you throw at it.

[2] Download the alternative Codec Pack from K-Lite for Windows => K-Lite Codec Pack Full.

    I hope this helps!

In general terms any codec installed can be used by any software on the system. Are the videos that stutter any certain type is MP4 ,Avi?

I find Windows Media Player extremely resource hungry and incapable to play most of my videos, so I almost never use it. OP should try MPC-hc, I have not came across the file this player couldn't play and it could play 1080p video perfectly on system so slow, WMP couldn't keep 10FPS. BTW I think my antivirus program flagged some shark007 files as suspect few years ago, so I never tried it again, but I don't think there is really need for it, unless OP is using some really exotic codecs.
