Why did microsoft decide not to support .gif viewing?

I hated that Vista didn't have the ability to open up a .gif image of a small clip, I thought they would change this in 7 - but nope.

Is there any chance they would release support for them in an update eventually?

I think it's just the photo viewer that won't play them. Right click on a .gif file, select Open With and choose Internet Explorer or Firefox and you should be able to view it.

The way I understand the issue with Gif images is that the actual format (especially the animation), is a semi proprietary one and has been the subject of several legal battles in the past.

I think Microsoft simply decided some time ago that apart from the web they would not support the format to avoid potential future issues

I've got Irfan, it gets a lot of use. It was just really convenient when I was able to view the animations in the standard image viewer in Windows.

It's the same thing as double clicking it. Won't do much good.

To set it to open default in IE or Irfan

Right click the .gif

Open With

Choose default program...

Click on Internet Explorer/Irfan

Tick "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

Press OK
I'm gonna give IrfanView a try now.

Microsoft Customer support gone wrong
Hi there. I went to the support page for Office but when you must key in the product ID it does not accept the ID. The reason as to why it is doing this: it is asking for the Windows OS product key and not the Office key. Of course if I do key in my OS key, it being an OEM version, it will prompt...

Why doesn't Microsoft support USB3.0?
G'day, We all know that in order to use USB3.0 ports, we need to install 3rd party drivers (e.g. Etron, NEC etc.). Sometimes this can be a real pain in the bum. With the increasing popularity of cheap USB3 storage devices, it seems logical to me that Microsoft would write and support their own...

Microsoft Hardware Support
You just can't beat Microsoft hardware support. I called them because the Wireless Desktop 2000 I bought occasionally, randomly misses keystrokes. They offered to replace it with the 4000 model no questions asked. I don't even have to send the old one back to them. You'd think mean ole...
