WinMedia Player tries to open all programs HELP

All Windows 7 programs and applications on Windows PC want to open using Windows Media Player.
Error message: "The file you are attempting to play has an extension (.exe) that does not match the file format. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior."

How would you fix this? This occurred when the speaker didn't load in the systray; user was trying to find a way to access speaker.
