Dates on photo/video files copied from digital camera

I have a Canon PowerShot SX110 IS digital camera, and 2 Dell laptops - a Dell Inspiron 9200 running Win XP Pro SP3 32 bit, and a Dell Precision M4600 running Win 7 Pro SP1 64 bit.

To copy photos from the camera to the laptops, I connect a cable from the camera to a USB port on the laptop. I don't need to install any software supplied with the camera. An entry "Canon PowerShot SX110 IS" comes up in the left panel in Windows explorer under "my computer" (XP) or "Computer" (Win 7), but it isn't assigned a drive letter. When I click on it, a list of photos and videos on the camera comes up on the right panel in Windows explorer, from where I can copy the files to the laptop.

After being copied to the laptop, on XP the photos/videos have both their date modified and date created set to the date/time the photo/video was taken, presumably copied from the EXIF information, which is what I want. However on Win 7, the date modified and date created are set to the current date/time. Like with XP, I want the dates to be set to the date/time the photo/video was taken.

Does anyone know how to change this? I can't seem to find out how it works or where to look.

I know I could probably take the memory card out of the camera, put it in a card reader and plug that into the PC, and that might fix the dates (depending on how I copy the files), but I don't want to have to do that every time I copy photos/videos to the PC.

    Thanks,
    Tim

On my computer with Windows 7 only the Date Accessed and Date Created are changed to the current date.
The Date Modified on the PC is the same as the Modified date on the phone

BTW, I used drag and drop to copy the photo to the PC.
