My window options look different, I don't have that upper menu bar. If I right click and select view, there is no option: "Customize menu". Moreover for me the mp4 thumbnails are missing from every folder, not just particular folders. Other video types have thumbnails however: movs, mpegs, vobs.

If you're using Windows Ultimate then it sure should be there. You have something more going on there. Any third party themes installed or Explorer modifications?

Nothing. The only thing I can think about is something happened when I added/removed codecs. But I cannot recall the point when it went missing. Maybe when I installed players, like BSPlayer.

It could be codec related, but the other issue here is that you don't even see the UI of what I have in Windows 7. Try this once.

I can see the menu bar now pressing F10, but none of the options in the View menu affects MP4 thumbnails. They simply do not appear, see the screenshot. MPG thumbnails appear, MP4 do not. I tried installing BS Player. On installation, a screen appears reporting about missing elements, and whether to install or not. It reports, that FDDSHOW is missing as well. Isn't it the element Windows needs to show thumbnails? Anyway, the Media Player playes MP4s fine.

Managed to solve the issue. The registry might have been bad. I installed K-lite codec pack, set associations and thumbnails, now it works. Even after deinstalling K-lite. I checked the registry, there is a different value now, the key structure is totally different than what was there or suggested online in forums. It seems this pack adds the proper structure and keys.
