Multiple File Renaming

OK, hope this is the right forum, it is to do with pictures, amongst other things. I have a strange problem regarding renaming multiple files, mainly pictures as I have tons of them. Whenever I name all pictures in a folder, highlighting them all and renaming the first one, it renames the first 40 in groups of two, as follows:

Filename (1)
Filename (1)
Filename (2)
Filename (2)
Filename (3)
Filename (3)

...and so on until it gets to 20, then they're renamed properly.
They are all JPEGS. This method worked brilliantly in XP, why not 7?

Does anyone have any ideas at all around this, or even some software I can use to rename files?

Thanks for reading, and to those that do, thanks for trying

EDIT: Never mind. I just foud the problem. Some files were JPEGs and some were JPGs. 7 renames files according to file type. I converted them all to JPGs then renamed them again. Now they're all in the correct name order. I'm an idiot.

I have the same problem too while renaming my images. The files are off JPEGs and NEFs file. I would like to rename it without having to change the file format. Used to do it without a problem in Win XP. Is there any way around this problem? How do i rename multiple files of different types in Windows 7

I recommend the free Bulk RenameUtility.
It's simply amazing what you could do with a file name expecially for Pics and mp3's.
It even (kind of) integrates into context menus
I said "kind of" because it doesn't just use marked files, it opens the directory and there you have to mark all files that should be affected by your operation. I use it for years for all my pics, tv shows etc.

You're very welcome.
I hear you I normally try to use as many "on board tools" as possible...but this one was so powerful and yet so easy to work with that I thought perhaps someone else might find it useful.
