    automatically rename music files

I ripped a CD with Windows media player while my Internet connection was out. Because of that, the folder for the CD is called unknown album and the track names are track 1, track 2, etc. However once my Internet connection was restored, Windows media player automatically found the metadata for the files. So when you look under properties it will list the artist, song title, etc. but the filenames have not changed. How would I automatically change the filenames so they are named according to the song title?

Try to rip the CD again, this time use the internet connection to gather metadata before the actual riping process starts.
If that doesn't work, you can edit the filenames manually, use another software package to rip the CD (EAC), use a program which manipulates tags which can also rename filenames (MP3Tag) etc.

The files you have on you computer can be automatically renamed by a program call Tag & Rename if you know the album title and artists, you wouldn't have to re-rip the cd. In the future though if you plan on ripping music professionally with gaps and cue sheets present with your files EAC is the way to go....

Foobar 2000 has a very good renaming feature based on tags. Check it out

What you see in the file properties is a reflection of the tags for that particular file. Tags are often incomplete or inaccurate.

mp3tag can be easily configured to FORCE a rename of the file, using info taken directly from correct tags.

There is a bit of a learning curve, but mp3tag is soon indispensable. You can also use it to force tags to correspond to a correct file name.

So all you really need is correct file names OR correct tags. Then you can force one to agree with the other.

The ultimate file renaming utility in my experience is "Name It Your Way", which gives you full control. I use it when I want to rename dozens or hundreds of files when the tags are also bad and can't be used to force a correct file rename. It's free and found by Google.
