With the proliferation of codec packs did we miss this?

Windows 7 plays Quicktime .mov files natively

I did a clean install of 7068 (I know, surprise surprise) and literally seconds after I got an email about the new Terminator HD trailers at TERMINATOR SALVATION

I wasn't paying attention and clicked http://pdl.warnerbros.com/wbmovies/t...atorTRL2_L.mov and IT PLAYED -- no Quicktime, no QT Alternative, it just played! Please note, Warner Brothers, like many other content authors are unabashed asshats and check the referrer on links like this so it won't play when clicked from this post. Go to the TERMINATOR SALVATION page above to check it out.

Further research shows that streamed QT junk still won't play without Crapple software or it's alternative but this is still a big step forward in decluttering Windows boxen everywhere. Heck with SumatraPDF replacing Adoobie PDF reader crapware I might never need to waste 100MB disk space and add install crashware startup tray applets just to play a simple file format again!

Yay! I'm just way too happy about this!

Edit: can't believe this is not getting more attention. Was this known an I missed it or has Quicktime just become a total non-issue these days?

I haven't loaded any codecs on my system and can play xvid/divx etc. So far there isn't a format I haven't been able to play but I do use MPC - Homecinema for movies so assumed that had a lot to do with it. Especially MKV. Will try some .movs online.

I went to Apple trailers but no joy - said I required Quicktime. Apple can kiss my ass - I have never installed QT in my life. I don't get the movie industries obsession with a minority format aaaaagh!

Careful, streamers don't work! Down load the .mov and play and make sure it's not one of those ridiculous "little .mov" files that have just a URL in them for streaming. If the file seems small for the content, it probably is.

It does make me wonder what Microsoft uses for the Divx codec though. Is it version 7? The older version 6.x? Their own version?

You must have overlooked the .mov support.

Improved playback support for video content from digital camcorders and cameras
Customers loved the increased range of formats natively supported by the Windows 7 Beta, but noticed areas where they wanted broader support. For example, one was unable to seek to a specific spot in the video in Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center for AVCHD content that was imported from a digital camcorder. We’ve addressed this. Also, while the support for video from some digital cameras worked great, we also got feedback about supporting a broader set of devices out of the box. We’ve since added support for Windows Media Player to natively support the .MOV files used to capture video for many common digital cameras.

Divx is actually standards based. MPEG-4 ASP they call it. Divx or Xvid is just an implementation of the standard (albeit loose in some regards). So Microsoft just decodes is with their own MP4 decoder.
