Does the VLC player show a thumbnail of the video on the desktop for WMV and RM?

Windows Media Player would play all formats provided when you install the codecs, you have to configure for it to play e.g MKV, MP4, flv, Real etc..., k-lite full 5.61 or Shark codecs would do it.

My favorite by far is GOMPlayer from GomLab. It plays everything that I need including FLV's, it;s very user friendly and has never crashed on me in at least 5 years (and as many versions). GOMPlayer. It also automatically downloads codecs as needed. Although, I do install my own codec packs.

If you want to kill your system, you can do that. Not on any of my systems.

there is nothing wrong with the codec packs. it is your choice not to use them, but since you do not use them do not make a broad statement like the one above.

I use to say VLC, but Media Player Classic Home Cinema hands down. It has support for x64, and supports EVR as part of DXVA/Media Foundation. You can also consider ffdshow x64 beta instead.

    ????

How is he going to "kill" his system by installing codecs? Having a guru badge(cough) means you are knowledgeable in all things seven and able to offer the best advise available and that my friend is on the contrary from you.

On to the op and his question my recommendation(for what its worth) would be either sharks codec pack for wmp12 or the kmplayer which is fabulous at it's job.

It is not my habit to make statements about things I do not understand - after 50 years in computers I know that this would not be the proper way of doing things. I did provide one reference (which leads to a lot of other references) to demonstrate my position. See here: Why Codec Packs Are Bad - How-To Geek Wiki

PS: Those who read will learn.

Shark, I am sure you are trying to do a good job. But that does not change the fact that there are a lot of very bad codec packs on the market. And the layman cannot tell the good ones from the bad ones. I have seen may people getting their system into trouble because of shoddy codec packs and had to bail them out.
