Assuming you want to get DRM free music on to your IPOD -- I'm not sure what you do in the case of music with DRM copy restrictions on it.

is the IPOD just "Drag 'n Drop" -- I've never used an IPOD but have other devices (Mobile Phones) which just look like an "external drive" to Windows -- so once you've got your music in Mp3 format either with tags or without you should be able to just cut and paste from Windows to your device.

There's loads of programs for creating MP3 files from WAV / FLAC / WMA etc etc all with tags if you need to.

(I don't use an Ipod so if you can't drag and drop mp3 files this way - then ignore the post - but IMO the device should work without having to use Itunes or whatever - most mobile phones that also act as a music player simply allow you to copy mp3 files on to the xd card or whatever in the phone).

iPods aren't Drag 'n' Drop devices, they can only be accessed by iTunes and other add-ons for media players.

They go by a library file, which is like a registry containing information about the music on the device, such as location, album art, name of the song, artist etc.

Hi there
Thanks -- we learn something new every day

Minidiscs (still use those when I'm on the move) are a similar problem but when I want to create a new compilation I burn my FLAC files (already tagged) to a "Virtual Audio CD" , mount it with Alcohol 52% Free edition and burn to Minidisc with the "MD CD==>MD burner" -- have to do with an XP VM though -- no probs --I get between 7 and 8 CD equivalents per MD which is plenty for a while -- and MD's are easy to label and track.

I don't really like using "Proprietary" Library formats for storing music -- I've got a number of separate FLAC folders -- I'm in the process of cataloguing and arranging via a MySQL database -- I'll post some code when I've got it working --you'll be able to search on all sorts of basic queries such as Composer, date. artist etc and of course make your own queries.

In the DB the actual music is accessed via a LINK to the track -- the music itself isn't stored in the DB so the DB can be kept reasonably small and the response to queries made FAST.

Best of all MySQL is free and if you combine it with APACHE and PHP you've got a great DB asccessible via the web as well.

Known as WAMP (Window. Apache, MySQL, PHP - the Linux version is LAMP)

Thanks for all the replies

@Jimbo - not sure I understood your reply - sounds complicated
@Uber - I agree. I am trying to stay DRM-free and don't want to deal with iTunes trying to make it disappear

Still looking for and add-on. I will probably work on it this weekend. If I try an add-on I will post with my experience

Vista/Windows 7

I use MGTEK dopisp to sync music from WMP to my i-pod.
It works great and I love it because I hate i-tunes, it runs so slow on my pc and just seems bloated and heavy.

I hate iTunes (and most crApple products) but use an iPod and so had this same dilemma. I'm using MGTek plugin and it works great so far, except I've found that it has an issue with copying over an mp3 AND a wma version of songs onto my iPoop...weird, right? It might be because my files on my computer are being rearranged from old music/itunes/itunes media/music/ARTIST/ALBUM to music/ARTIST/ALBUM, so for some reason it's pulling 2 versions off my computer. But, it might be messed up.

If MGTek duplicates files with you after a while, maybe it's a shoddy program :-/
