Error when trying to open Windows Media Player

When I try to open Windows Media Player, I get this error:

"The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 11.0.6001.7000 where 12.0.7000.7000 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled."

If I follow the option to go to Microsoft's website, it takes me to a page where Windows Media 6.4 is available for Win95 and NT 4.0.

How do I fix this?

  1. Go to Control Panel --> Programs and Features --> Turn Windows features on or off -> Expand Media Features --> Uncheck Media Player.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Let Windows do its thing, then reboot.
  4. Go back to the same place.
  5. Check Media player.
  6. Reboot.

I did think to check Programs and Features, however under "Turn Windows features on or off," Media Features is not listed.

Hi Xax, It seems that you have hacked the OS and installed WMP11 on there and it now has "The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 11.0.6001.7000 (this is WMP11) where 12.0.7000.7000 (this is WMP12) was expected", You may try opening the Elevated command prompt and type sfc /scannow, failing that then you will need to a repair install or maybe upgrade to the latest 7077 build.

Window Media Player is not install properly and must be reinstalled

Hello,

I have Window 7 Ultimate and the Window Media Player cannot start.

It promt an error of "Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled. Do you want to install the Player from the Microsoft Web site?"

How did you solve those problems?

Can you share please?

Thanks,
Edwin

i agree with mark, but am asking more directly; one, is your installation of windows 7 legitimate, and/or two, have you installed wmp11? If the answer to the first is yes, then i suggest your copy is at best corrupt.

EDIT: I see you have RC1 version of windows which seems to point to a download install and I have no problems with wmp12 with my x64 install complete with all available updates.

I have seen a couple of your problems now, I think that you're os MAY be pirated and cracked, i suppose its expected? Either that or your Version of Windows is corrupt (partially)

My system became somehow corrupted and had trouble starting, so I used the chkdsk option with file recovery. Everything worked except for windows media player 12. I tried the standard responses on how to "fix" it, i.e. deactivate then activate it but I kept getting a response that it had to be reinstalled, which of course is impossible through the microsoft site. Turns out wmp.dll was corrupted. I tried to restore to a previous point, which didn't work because of the corrupted file. I tried sfc scannow which didn't fix the file. So...I copied the file from a working windows 7 machine and tried to copy it into the system32 folder which of course I wasn't allowed to do without permission. So I found this file called take ownership which allowed me to take ownership of wmp.dll. I renamed it old, then copied the new one into system 32. Guess what? IT WORKED!!! Easier than repairing the entire installation just for a stupid media player!
