Winamp - CD Noise when ripping

    Hi all
Got one of those "New fangled" music thingy's for XMAS
Am ripping loads of CD's to laptop computer and the device.

I notice on some CD's when ripping the CD makes a noise a bit like a Dentist's drill (Old fashioned kind) running.

Doesn't happen on all CD's -- and the quality of the rip doesn't seem to be affected.

Any info on what the noise is.

    Cheers

Could be the CD's - if they are slightly warped. I get that on some commercial CD's and DVD's even when installing programs. Some of it is the higher read speeds of newer drives and it can be the drive itself - some drives and especially OEM drives can be noisy. I replaced the OEM drives in my Dell desktop and the new drives were noticeably quieter.

    What drive are you using?

Some drives offer "acoustic silencing" modes. Maybe check the manufacturers web site and see if they have that as a utility download.
