Have you checked your library settings in the WMP options? If you haven't already, try including the external HDD in your library directories.

Click around the WMP menu for an option to add, or remove a directory to the WMP library. I can't remember exactly where it's located, because I don't like adding directories to my library. I don't know if WMP has changed or not, but it use to copy all the music and/or video from your newly chosen directory to an allocated space on C:\ drive used by WMP. Esentially duplicating those files, and taking up HDD space. Which can be a real drag when you have about 5GB of music files, and 10GB of video...LOL

I've only got about 400MB of video, but 125GB of music.
If the OP's external music is added to the Music library(not the WMP library), then WMP should be able to access it without duplicating it, I think.....I can't swear to it though, because I really don't use WMP......tried it at first, but I have other apps I like better.

Thanks for the additional insight. I just wanted to make sure the OP knew about the possibility of duplication. I can imagine it would really tick someone off who has limited HDD free-space. Better safe than sorry, eh?

I definitely agree, better safe than sorry.
Like I said, I'm not 100% sure on that......my music is on my internal drive, and backed up onto my external drive, unlike the OP. But I think that is how it will work.

my external hdd is added to my music library,it is the default save location for wmp 12.my problem was and still is,when wmp 12 access the music from the external drive it will display as unknown, but if i rip to the desktop then include in music library everything is good artwork and all shows up.dont know why wmp 12 don't seem to like external hdd.ripping with wmp 12 works great but no good ripping options other than wav, which would be fine as i have the space, but when streaming wav to my receiver it breaks up,if someone can educate me on that,i would be grateful.

Hello,

Try to rebuild you library maybe its a bad or corrupted !!
  1. Shutdown windows media player.
  2. Stop the media sharing service. Go to Start-> Control Panel->All Control Panel Items-> Administrative Tools-> Services. Right-click on the “Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service” and select Stop.
  3. Navigate to “c:\Users\”your username”\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player. Now delete the files named CurrentDatabase_***.wmdb and LocalMLS_*.wmdb.
  4. Start the media sharing service.
  5. Now start Windows Media Player and see whether it works
Hope this helps,
Captain
