problems viewing .AVI files with MPC Home Cinema x64

Lately I have had trouble watching .AVI files with MPC. .MP4 and .MKV files play perfectly.
.AVI files are jumpy (play a second, pause, play another second, pause, etc.)
Windows Media Center and Media Player both play these files perfectly.

    Any suggestions?
I re-installed MPC, and FFD Show (made sure they were the latest). Restarted the computer, no change.

I don't have a solution ATM, I'll do some research. For the moment, use one of your other players or download:

Use "System Default" for "DirectShow Video" Output.

I suggest downloading CCCP Codec pack. I have great playback on MPC with it, with virtually every file I throw at it. Also, if you go this route, you can also download CCCP Insurgent. You use this to quickly identify codec packs installed on your system.

Both programs at the same URL:

    http://www.cccp-project.net/

I suggest first using Insurgent, see what codec packs you have. Uninstall ALL codec packs, even if it is already CCCP. Uninstall and remove all settings when prompted.
    Uninstall MPC.
1.)Start again with no codec packs, install CCCP.
2)MPC comes included with the CCCP pack, install it with the package
    3) Install Haali Media ffdshow and all other options.

This is all I had to do to have MPC playing back virtually any file I throw at it.
    Hopefully it works for you.

    If it does. Cool.

    OR

download VLC Media Player like NOTSOGREYMATTER says.

Personally, I'd recommend stitching your own codec pack together rather than installing a blanket codec party. The only reason I normally recommend K-Lite is the fact that most people don't want to download 5 files when they can download 1. All you have to do is figure out what type of files you're going to be using.

    The most popular:
    FFD-Show
    XviD/DivX
    x.264
    Real
Matroska's MKV formats (should be covered by x.264 or h264)

If you install codecs as needed instead of in a big pack it'll be easier to diagnose problems and remove problem codecs and replace with newer ones. But in all reality, VLC kicks the pants off any codec because it contains them on its own. That means to remove all that junk all you've got to do is uninstall the thing. The only problems with it are that it's bulky due to including everything under the sun and it won't cover some of the online videos. In other words, if you want to use sites that stream xvid media you'll have to install an xvid codec along w/ DivX Web Player or whatever web module the website is using. But give me the choice between a bulky codec pack and MPC HC or just a bulky VLC I'll choose VLC.

TS's issue is not "this media doesn't work"-kind of issue, it's stuttering issue... Installing codec packs will solve the "this media doesn't work"-kind of issue, maybe some drop frames, but not stuttering...

I had this problem, and this is how I solved it:

View -> Options -> Internal Filters

Under 'Source Filters,' uncheck DirectShow Media
Under 'Transform Filters,' double click on 'Xvid'
On the window that opens, change IDCT from auto to Xvid
    Click Apply
    Click Apply

    Done.

    Did not help here.

I have this problem (or similiar) often clicking to a new position in a file. Something in MPC-HC goes nuts. It starts using much more CPU and stuttering with a big pause about once/second and I mean big pause. It is completely unwatchable. I have tried both versions of MPC-HC (32 anc 64 bit).

Once it starts doing this I have had some success, doing a pause/play, pause/play and I can usually get it back into even flow. CPU usage drops and everything is OK.

I never had this issue in WinXP with MPC-HC.

WMP12 never has this issue, and VLC never does either.

I also seems to happens more when windows has been up for days, or using sleep instead of turning it off.

It is happening really bad for me right now. CPU was 25% (of a 3.2GHz quad) After clicking pause/play a few times I got it out of glitch mode and it is smooth now and using 4%. It will now play the file till the end smoothly if I don't touch it.

There definitely seems to be some kind of glitch between Win7 x64 and MPC-HC that I never had before.

Edit: More research shows Nvidia Driver problem affecting large number of people.
This post indicates NVidia drivers to be the problem with EVR:

For the Afflicted reverting to 196.21 seems to completely fix it.

I would say definately a video studdering issue with .avi files (I haven't used .wmv to confirm this format), and x32/x64 does not matter, also changing the codecs makes no difference. Sometimes hitting Pause/Stop then Play will resolve this for the curently playing video, but only if I don't touch it again (except to go full-screen/window) during playback. I am not willing to downgrade my Nvidia drivers to a much older version as a resolve for this. *If it is indeed their drivers, I can confirm the latest drivers still have this issue.
