    Problems encountered with Photo viewer

I have noticed that photoviewer of windows 7 is very very slow in opening images and changing images. Its far more slower than vista, windows xp or even windows 98.What is wrong with it.
Here is a screenshot of how photoviewer looks before image is opened :

I have noticed the same thing occurring only after I performed the "color calibration". I confirmed the same thing happening on my laptop as well. It would open all pictures just fine, in a speedy fashion, until I performed the color calibration for the display. After that, it would show the same thing you've posted, before each pictures was opened.

I went into the color profiles for each machine, deleted the profile that was created by the calibration, set it back to the default sRGB profile, and the problem went away.

This may or may not be your problem, but it's certainly a problem I've noticed.

I highly recommend trying a free image viewer called Faststone Image Viewer. I use it as my default image viewer in place of the windows photo viewer or live photo viewer. It's much faster and better in so many ways, imo.

In the settings section, you can customize it to work exactly as you might prefer, e.g., set specific keys to do certain things, like using the scroll wheel to zoom. One thing I love is the way you can set the app to open photos in full screen with no menus showing. The menus flyout when you move the cursor to the edges of the screen. Makes it nicer to view your photos and yet still is easy to edit or work with them.

does anyone find the picture viewer goes a lot slower when you go backwards?

viewing pictures forwards with the next button zips along nicely, but as soon as i use the back button, i get a brief, but appreciable, pause.

    anyone else notice this?

Yea, but that's there in XP, too. I think it's just a result of the picture caching process, that you're more likely to want to go forward quickly than you are backward. So, it caches X number of pictures ahead each time you load a picture, but not pictures behind it. Therefore, they are ready and waiting in memory when you go forward, but when you go backward, it's like opening a picture up the first time and it starts over.

    Or, maybe not.

SOLUTION - At some stage you probably color calibrated your display using the tool in Windows 7. As soon as you remove this calibration profile speed will return to normal.

Right Click Desktop -> Screen Resolution -> Advanced Settings -> Color Management -> Color Management -> Advanced -> Change System Defaults

Then click on the default profile (the one you are using now) and click Remove. The profile should have some string in it like 'calibrated' ( I forget, I just deleted mine ). Make sure the new default profile does not have the 'calibrated' string in it. When you click Remove you will probably note some change in the screen colors as another profile becomes the default.

Now suddenly the image viewer will be lightning fast.
    Go figure.
