You might want to give this program a try
This program lets you close all running applications with just a single click. It doesn’t use system resources because it only flashes a ‘close’ signal to all open applications on the desktop and then ceases. Just create a shortcut to the tool in the Start Menu, Quick Launch, Windows 7 Taskbar or elsewhere.

Or
Hold the CTRL key down and click on each of the tabs in the Task Bar (at the bottom of the screen) that you want to close. Then right click on one of the selected tabs and select "Close Group" from the menu that appears. Selecting "Close Group" will close all the windows you have selected.
Or
If you just opened a number of separate, related windows (a folder inside a folder, and so on), there’s an easier way to close them all than one-at-a-time. Hold down the Shift key as you click the X caption button in the upper-right corner of the last window opened. Doing so closes that window and all windows that came before it.
I hope one of these helps you.
Is it becaues there is a window open for each loaded file?
Try looking on the File menu for an option to "Close All", most multiple document programs have one.
That's it! after 20 years of closing 50 to 100+ windows one at a time you have supplied me with a solution. I hit the power button a few times to force a shutdown but that was a rough way to go. It really was a pain to shut down 100 windows one at a time. The strange thing is that after I used the "alt f4" method my "close all windows " tab on the pulldown menu started working and shut them down also, (after 20 yrear of struggling). Thanks everyone for you help and reps given here.
Yes it was because there was a window open for each file and a dialog box popped up every time asking if I wanted to save the file before closing. The "close all tabs" in the pulldown menu would be too easy, i tried that thing about 50 times. fishnbango's method is the ticket bacause I close the program after closing 100+ windows anyway.
Well I took fishnbangos advice and it worked one time. It was simply pressing alt and f4. Now it just makes my dialogue window just blink on and off.
Still can't close all the open windows in PS Elements 5 all at one time. I would settle for anything short of hitting the power off button on the CPU. I tried alt>f4 and it worked one time but now the diologue box just blinks when I hit it. I just hit the power of button a couple times but it is too drastic. I have been closing 50-100 windows one at a time for 20 years so any help would be appreciated. This is about the fourth time I have requested help on this.
