Need Help Setting Up Shark win7 codecs with GOM

So I am using Win7 64bit and GOM player to play video files, and decided on Shark's codec pack since I read a lot of recommendations for it. I have used GOM with a lot of codec packs including Shark's but I always somehow end up unsatisfied. Main problem are MKV, rmvb and quick time videos.

Firstly MKV: I tried using the settings to chose different codecs to play the files, including the built in GOM codecs, and while some codecs didnt show subtitles properly or didnt show them at all, others affected the smoothness of playback in GOM (framy by frame effect on playback). Also I cant see any thumbnails for mkv files. Also sometimes when i disable built in codec for MKV from gom prefs>filters depending on chosen external codec i may get codec missing msg even though the video plays in GOM but there is no sound (tried to open the video in WMP in those cases and it plays perfectly in WMP).

rmvb: mostly the problem here is gom player can not find the codec even though the codec pack states it is included. also again missing thumbnails.

quick time: i seriously cant play these files unless i install the quicktime codec and player from official site. thumbnails again missing.

mp4: no problems in playback here, just the missing thumbnails.

So to sum it up, since i have noticed some ppl use GOM + Shark codec pack, can anyone please help me and guide me to the best possible choice of settings for both gom and the Shark codec pack so that I can play all these files smoothly, with subtitles if they have them, and have thumbnails too. I seriously cant manage my way in the settings since the number of them is so vast, and I cant even understand what some of them might do.

1st problem - your choice of player
2nd problem - installing crappy codecs because your chosen player thinks you need them
3rd problem - installing Quicktime
4th problem - not enough system RAM to run Windows 7 let alone a hd video on that system

solutions?
upgrade the system RAM to a minimum of 2gig for 32bit and 4gig for a 64bit OS
format the HDD, install Windows 7 clean, dont install crap codecs/players.
Try using Windows Media Player 1st, get it all working there before trying other players
Do yourself a favor, Avoid GOM player

actually win 7 runs quite fine ^^ as for my system specs it was a mistake, its actually 2x1GB ram @ 1066

anyways i managed to sort it out after downloading the latest release of the codec. I just disabled all the built in codecs of GOM and downloaded the latest release your codec, installed it on full and left it on default settings. now all the files play great with GOM (which is a player i wouldnt change for anything). Worked like a charm :)

Now I just dont know if i need the x64 bit addon for the codec pack since GOM player is 32 bit or not. Anyways MKV and RMVB thumbnails still don't show... any trick to resetting the thumbnails for all files? cause i know it says the codec now has a built in thumbnail generating program.

On x64 systems you need x64 codecs just to do the thumbing.
Install the x64 Components (use version 259, majorgeeks has it),
open the x64 settings application and choose to use the SUGGESTED settings checkbox.
Go to the SWAP TAB and UNcheck the DMO video codecs (this setting breaks AVI thumbs)

will I need to restart PC after all that for changes to take effect?

I have no personal experience with it other than it installs OLD codecs and this aspect is the source for crashed OS's and at the very least, headaches and grey hair. An experienced user such as yourself may be knowledgable enough not to allow it to install codecs but the average user will allow it thinking it is going to solve their problems, but instead, it creates more problems.

I use the Windows supplied players because my codec installations support playback of all formats in the native players including RealMedia.

The x64 components did the trick for the thumbnails perfectly. Though found 2 user interface related bugs: when I started the x64 settings app it said "Newer version available 258, would you like to visit site..." while I downloaded the 259 version which is obviously newer. And when I set the SUGGESTED settings it said "All file types have been configured to open with Windows Media Player" and that got me scared for a bit but luckily they still open with GOM. So probably just a notification mistype.

Anyways my video playback is now perfect!

As for to note why most people chose alternative players, Shark, it is because of the serious lack of options that WMP has - especially when faced with MKV and other containers that use soft subs or multiple audio streams. In most players you can right click and have options to select streams or subs, adjust aspect ratio for videos that have a messed up ratio, chose subtitle location for subs that are in an .srt .txt or .sub files (one of the biggest possible flaws of WMP), you can adjust audio stream timing as well as subtitle timing with a button, set hotkeys and shortcuts, and basically edit everything that the player can do.

In WMP the only thing I find appealing is the skin and the glassy touches, but wont be long i reckon till other players find a way to implement alpha channel in the picture files used to make skins. Still the player is an individual choice, and as such there can not be a universal best player (as for codecs I might add now that your pack does it all, and can not be topped by anything out there when it comes to windows 7)
