In your bios there should be a setting where it will say Auto Manual or X.M.P i don't think it comes on by default but flip threw it and check, also what kind of ram do you have?

Thanks. I'll check that out.

Corsair CMD8GX3M4A1600C8 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3.

Using it on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard with a Intel Core i7 950 cpu.

X.M.P. was disabled in my BIOS by default. Set it to "Profile1" to see how it goes. Nothing going wrong so far.

Wish me luck over the next week to see if this is the fix.

Looks like it wasn't the answer for me. Turned on the computer today and it happened again.

Seems to be a certain amount of time before it happens usually. No matter if I'm on firefox or what ever else. Then it's fine after a hard reset.

For those looking to avoid damage to your computer due to these freezes. I do the following:

I leave my computer at the login screen for 5-10 minutes. Instead of freezing, it makes it super slow there. Just enough for me to hit the shutdown and do a hard reset because it freezes at "shutting down." Yet even though I do a hard reset, it was properly shut down.

As for an actual fix. Hoping there is an answer that doesn't involve a full replacement of the RAM that isn't corsair.

hi!

I read all the posts, interesting - will try those sugestions.

But one interesting things what happens to my pc. When i turn it on it freezes and as everybody posted, there is no note of it in event viewer. (normal :D ) But when i turn my pc on whitout having enhernet wire pluged, it runs normally. When plug in the wire, everything hangs up just in few seconds. Cool, isn't it.. :/
And normaly with wire it sometimes hangs up after few seconds.

and one more, i think the computer ir a bit slower , just a bit, but maybe not.
i'm running
asus comando mobo
intel cpu
ati gpu

tried stoping iphelper, no use.

Odd. My computer didn't freeze 10 minutes after turning it on. But instead it froze 10 hours after powering it on. Whilst browsing the internet in firefox of course. That was really random.

Still no solution to the problem found yet.

Unfortunately, h/w issues don't run on a schedule.

What speed is the RAM running at? ie 1066mhz or 1600mhz?

Have you manually entered the timings and voltages?

For 1600mhz, they should be:

8-8-8-24 (the rest can be left on AUTO for the time being)

DRAM voltage 1.65v (BIOS will either give you an option for 1.64 or 1.66 )

Your VTT (QPI/DRAM) may also need a minor voltage bump with 4 out of the 6 dimms being used.

Have you tried running memtest86 yet?

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Burn the .iso as a bootable CD or USB stick, boot from the CD/stick and let it run overnight (8hrs+)

If it immediately starts showing errors - then you can stop it. Otherwise, let it run for the 8hrs+ and see if it shows any errors.

It could be any number of things, like a faulty module, faulty dimm slot or simply some incorrect settings.

Hey guys I've been having the same problem on my PC as well. I'm able to play games like Stranglehold, Gears of War, FEAR, Stalker etc. with no crashes pass 3 hours but a simple task like browsing brings my rig to a grinding halt. I've tried most of the suggestions here, from removing all thing associated to flash.
They way it freezes puzzles. First the entire desktop would be freeze, but I'll be able to move the cursor for a few seconds, then complete freeze.
Used MEMTEST86+, zero errors. Using stock components on stock speed. My system is only a week old and it's really killing cause I don't know what's wrong with it.

Corsair CMD8GX3M4A1600C8 8GB (4x XMS3 2GB) PC-12800 (1600MHz) DDR3 RAM, 2x240-pin DIMMs

That's the RAM I have installed in my computer I built. I haven't tried memtest yet. But I will check the settings you listed for BIOS since you what you recommended is for the 1600MHz RAM chips I have.

Edit: Okay I went to check. The settings in the BIOS are exactly as the ones you listed. The only one that isn't 8-8-8-24 is channel C, which there are DIMM slots not filled with RAM chips.

Previously before I set XPM from Disabled to Profile 1, it was running at 1066 MHz. Once I switched over a few weeks ago, it is current at 1600 MHz. Yet the exact same occurrence of freezes continued.

I can try memtest, but it doesn't look like it would be helpful as many others have done so with the exact same ram and it passed.

Quoting from Corsair's forums:
I just completed a self-build using the Asus P7P55D-E Pro motherboard, Core i7 860 and the CMD8GX3M4A1600C8 8GB kit. [...]

However, I seem to have the exact same problem as the OP in this thread [...]

Essentially, with all 4 modules loaded, the system passes POST and boots into Windows 7 (64bit) but freezes within minutes but at random times. Sometimes freezing at the start screen and at others a short time after displaying the desktop.

With any 2 modules loaded, the system seems stable. The modules seem fine with no errors in Memtest86+.

Actually, the recommended limit of running only two ranks of 1600 memory per channel is per the official JEDEC specification. Intel and AMD merely had to follow those recommendations. As such, if you want 8GB of memory at 1600 speed, you will have to find an 8GB dual-channel kit with only two modules. Unfortunately, such kits are significantly more expensive right now than four-module 8GB kits. If you fill up all four slots with double-ranked 2GB modules (for a total of 8GB), running the memory at 1333 or lower speed is advised for better stability.

In short, no Intel or AMD platform can run 1600 memory at full speed with the tightest-rated timings with more than one double-ranked module per channel.

With so many others experiencing similar symptoms. It's starting to look like a manufacture fault/incompatibility with Windows 7 64-bit by having more than 4GB of RAM.

If the above quote is true. The only fix would be to buy two 4 GB RAM modules or take out two of my 2 GB RAM modules and go back to 4 GB of RAM in total.

This makes me sad. :(

First the entire desktop would be freeze, but I'll be able to move the cursor for a few seconds, then complete freeze. Used MEMTEST86+, zero errors. Using stock components on stock speed. My system is only a week old and it's really killing cause I don't know what's wrong with it.

Sounds like the typical symptom that occurs. Either that or a complete freeze straight up. What RAM chips do you have?

I'm using Kingston 1333MHz 4GB DDR3. Wouldn'y my games be constantly crashing as well?

not in QVL

Azure - I went to check the QVL for your motherboard. Your memory isn't listed, the list is surprisingly short. If you haven't done so already, as the next step I would try 1 Dimm a time.
With this method I could very easily identify my problem.

While I always recommended the brand in the past? Whenever I read about these crashes, it troubles me that very often ddr3 Corsair memory seems to be involved.

btw Windows 7 64bit is existing for one reason only: to be able to use more than 4 GB of RAM. You shouldn't doubt that ability.

Why we are checking settings in bios ? In my case there was win xp for some years running without any problems. Now on the same system without any mods there is running win 7 and those shutdowns are only now on the win7. So the problem is somewhere in drivers/updates or somthing..
And one more. I'm working on a lot of pc and notebooks with win7 running. But only the pc with win7 64bit is making those ... shutdowns. :geek:

I agree with your point Saru. But then... from all my close friends, not a single one is using an application that remotely cosumes more than 2 gig RAM - they just don't admit it. So why doesn't everybody stick to the less problematic 32bit OS and give all the developers 2 more years to let their 64bit drivers mature?
Troubleshooting PC problems can get so darn complicate. Especially after one bought as precious and expensive RAM as Azure did. I hope he can solve his issue some day. heads up everyone.

I wonder if putting in three out of the four modules in three different channels would solve the problem.

Edit: Changed the physical position of my RAM in my computer. Instead of having a total of four modules in two channels. I have three modules with one in each channel so I have three channels going at once. Leaving the fourth module out as a spare.

First power on has gone smoothly.

I'll come back in a weeks time to see if it is the true solution to my problem.

Problem Solved.

It's been almost a week and there have been no signs of the problem returning.

The VQL states that there is RAM being added to the market constantly, so the list cannot be constantly updated and is only a recommendation.

The real problem is you cannot have more than one dual sided RAM module in any given channel.

Thus I had to take out two of the four modules that were placed in only two channels. Positioned it so I had one module in each of the three channels I have. Leaving one spare and virtually useless. Plus knocking me back from 8 gig to 6 gig of RAM.

If I want more than 2 gig of RAM per channel that I have. I really have no choice but to wait for the 4 gig RAM modules to be become available and affordable on the market.

so, the problem is that win 7 can't use those modules on the same time? But how it can be, becouse now every ram module is dual sided and boards also are the same with two/two slots. - On my MB there also are two / two ram slots. So it means, that I only can use 1 on each side, leaving the other one on the same side empty - so ? :geek:

i just looked, i have 4 slots and 4 modules.. bad, i don't want to remove half of ram..

I found out from my shopkeeper that the Windows 7 that was installed on my PC was actually imaged onto my hard drive with all freeware software pre-loaded. Did a fresh install and the freezing on browsers is completely gone.
However, I still have 21 windows update pending and I haven't installed them cause I've seen people stating that the browser causes the whole PC to lock up and they fixed that problem by going to the restore point before the updates were installed.

Well a bit of bad news.

The problem went away for a few weeks.

Today how ever. I started up my computer. Attempted to open fire fox. That familiar problem of the mouse being movable whilst every thing else was frozen is back.

I did a hard reset. Opened fire fox. Tried to navigate back here. Complete freeze. Which was odd, never has it frozen a second time in a row.

So back to square one. :(

(Still running my computer with only 3 ram modules in the 6 slots I have)
