Is there a way to file share with XP?

I need to be able to file share with drives on my main PC, I have tried setting up homegroup but this did not help me at all. If it doesn't then my question would be is Microsoft going to make file & printer sharing backwards compatible?

Ok,

Have set-up sharing on my old xp box, (took a while didn't have screen or anything connected :D ), and
at the moment this now shows in Network and sharing centre (I have the LLP provider running on XP),
and I can link to shares via \\servername\sharename.
at the moment I cannot browse the network for resources but obviously can see the shares. :D

I can also ping the xp box by either name or IP address

whatasteal, you could try to set-up your printer as local then set up a network port pointing to the \\server\printername

XP can see and browse the network and a vista and Win7 box

it may be that something is not working on XP or one of the old protocols not working on Win 7 so will have to check this out and post back :D

Hi Whatasteal,

First
glad to hear you're up and running.

Second
an update - after a while a refresh of the network on the windows 7 machine showed the XP Box and it's shares, there was a similar problem with Vista so will have to check out solutions and try applying to Windows 7

I can see my XP and WHS box on the network map after installing LLTP but they still don't show in Windows Explorer. Yes, you can access them by \\name but this only a temproaray solution. It doesn't stick.

If you cant make and XP product show up this will be a show stopper for many people. I can not believe that MS doesn't know about this issue or why it was allowed to get this far.

Anyone found any solutions??

Best I could figure so far is to pin windows explorer to the task bar then right click, properties and change target to \\xpcomputer name.

Note: Won't stick after reboot.

Isn't there always a way gentleman? Search and type services..make sure DHCP Client is auto, DNS is auto and IKE AuthIP is started. Also, Net.TCP Port sharing is also started. As far as the other services make sure they're the norm for vista sharing with xp..good luck!! Works like a charm.

I'm going to step up to the wager window and place a $20 win bet on the #1 horse named "ibetyoudonthaveapasswordsetupontheXPmachine"

also, "use user accounts and passwords to connect..." under advanced sharing / Homegroup

Hi, it is my first post here, and I'm sorry for my english (in advance).

After a lot of work I can set up my network: main PC with W7 and secondary with XP SP2. With W7 Beta.

When I installed RC I can never setup my network again.

My W7 PC have a net card (onboard) connecter with the internet modem, and a second card connected with a net switch. It always worked with XP on both PCs.

When I installed W7RC my second adapter was set as public network and I can't change it on no way. When I made work the network with W7 Beta I changed this to Work network.

Is there a hiden command or a secret way to do this?

Thanks.

PS: I have set on the discovery network, and sometimes it sees the XP pC, but I can´t access the shares.

EDITD: I forget to say, I can access the shares on the W7 PC from the XP one, but not the opposite case.

Xp to win 7 file sharing easy

Hi all been fiddling around for ages and finally figured out how to do this.

1. in xp go to control panel/system/computer name and call your computer that has xp something that you want.and call the workgroup WORKGROUP! you pc may need a restart ok

2.On the pc that has win 7 on it go to

controlpanel/network and internet/homegroup and make sure that you are not joined or have left the homegroup

right click computer click properties and go to advanced sytem settings and then computer name.

call this pc something that you want and call the workgroup WORKGROUP!

To start file sharing from xp to win 7 right click any file and click sharing

and adjust the settings to suit.

you should now see all computers and sharing files on win 7 pc

good luck

Thanks, but no. That's the standard procedure to share files since Windows 98 SE. When you try to do this linking a W7 and a XP, this don't work.

Nothing has changed at all with networking in Windows 7. It can be effectively treated as if it was Vista, XP etc...

Common problems are no passwords being set, "change advanced sharing settings" in Network and Sharing center not being configured, not allowing everyone permission for a shared drive/folder on remote machine, not allowing firewall access if using 3rd party.

Torrentg is correct. I have been sharing from my XP machine since Jan. You can just use the "public" sharing option which can be accessed from the advanced sharing options menu. You also need to enable sharing on the XP machine.

You need to have all of these checked on the Win 7 machine for public sharing.

Hi. I use networks over Windows since W98SE (but never used Vista).

It worked always by connect a PC with another via cross-cable or via hub or switch. Always worked, even when I connected PCs with different Windows versions.

However, with Windows 7 (I'm beta testing it since the first beta version) I can never connect a W7 PC with a XP PC.

Net:

- PC with W7 connected to internet ADSL modem.
- switch
- PC with WXP

The XP can navigate, see, read and write the W7 shared files and folders. The W7 PC can see the XP PC and its shared folders but can't access this.

I tried everything: of course the "discover" turned on; the addresses "forced" to 192.168.0.1 - n; password protect / unprotect... every option, but almost never can do the job.

Of course, if I use a router I suppose everything will go well, but I haven't a router right now so I can't try it.

When I installed the different W7 beta versions, the RTM and the final versions I almost never can manage the network as it must be. One of the versions (I can't remember the version) allowed me to set the network to "work network" and it was the only moment I can connect the PCs in a double-way. With all of the other versions, W7 sets my netowrks as Public networks and I cannot modify this setting (only on the internet connection, but if I change this, I can't access the internet).

Copy and paste Services.msc to the start menu search box and hit enter on the W7 machine.

Look for Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. Set it to automatic and start it too.

Might have to do the same thing on the XP machine, but I don't think so.

None of the mentioned methods work for me. I can't access my xp box (could be that its password protected tho). The thing is, this worked just fine when i was using vista. Oh yea and i can't remove the password because i have no monitor for the pc... so if anyone has any ideas on how to set up sharing without changing anything on the pc, post them here please
