    Still can't link network printer

I just spent the past few days researching posts on this problem but nothing has yet to help. Based on all the posts, this must be a major issue.

Like others, I have a pc running XP w/sp3 and printer attached and am attempting to print from my wireless laptop running Win7. I've tried multiple guides suggested from various forums, the How to Geek and even your very own Jimbo 45 but nothing works.

When I set the printer to share and set up a local port, \\MasterPC\i960, I get "network path not found". Shared printer doesn't show up under the network browsing area. I don't use the Windows firewall and have disabled my PCTools firewall. I still need to set up 2 other XP laptops once this is resolved.

I was using Network Magic for my file and print sharing but not without it's own quirks.

Member Digerati suggested using a print server on a previous post. If I can't resolve this in the next day or two, I will seriously consider it.

    Thanks for any help...

Just thinking about this. Is your printer wireless or connected by a CAT 5 cable to your modem, or USB? What port do you have your printer on?

letsdoamazing : Connected too the XP computer.

    Hi,

I have never had any trouble with sharing a Networked printer with any OS and I've been from XP too 7. What you have too remember is that 7 will need different drivers then XP inc 64 bit versions.

I can help Via msn most night (UK time) and or via Logmein. I have a account and can set you up if your having trouble.

    Regards

    Roger

PS, try setting up the XP's comps first. You might find thats its there waiting for you.

click on the start button and type in \\MasterPC\
This should show you all the shares on MasterPC. If you see the printer there double click on it and it will install.
In prefer this method opposed to the add printer wizard for network printers.

I finally was able to setup the shared printer with Win7. I went the route via Network and Sharing Center, view network computers and devices. I wasn't able to do this before because view by category wasn't checked and for some stupid reason, view network computers is not a option when small or large icons are checked. I hope Jimbo 45 reads this post. I suggest he add this little fact to his tutorial, it can solve some major head aches.

Now my problem is that my XP laptops can see the shared printer but won't print no matter if firewall is up or down. Since this is a Win7 only forum, I need to move on.

I agree with Digerati completely. You will be much better off directly connecting the printer to the network. You will avoid many future problems. :)
