How to share files over workgroup

The computers in our company are connected through a LAN network but divided into 3 different workgroups (using the workgroup name in Windows 7).

I want to set up a file sharing system so that a users in each workgroup can share files to other users in the same workgroup but users outside of that workgroup cannot access to those files.

    How can I implement it?

P/S: when I use the file sharing option, I can only share to everyone to to no one, I cannot choose specific users or workgroup.

One way to do it is by using users and groups. create a new group. give them user level privileges. On the share folder create custom permissions where normal users cannot open or read. allow new users whatever permissions you want.

Is that what you are trying to do?

Perhaps a simpler question is: how can I share files with a specific user on the network (no one else can see what I share)? When I try to share, I cannot find any user other than myself.

If you need to share files with one specific user, then you may have to add that user to your PC. Then go into the share / security permissions of the folder and add that user. Under the User names/groups, there is edit, in that dialog, click add...

But obviously this would be difficult in a large LAN, so then what zigzag suggested above is the better way.

I have done exactly that. However:

    • The created user can access to the shared folder if logged in on the sharing computer.
    • The same user can only see the folder but cannot open it from another computer.

    How to troubleshoot it?

The user name and password must be exactly the same on the sharing PC and accessing PC.

Is password required? Currently, every account is passwordless.

Yes, password is required. Maybe some more experienced users can help if you want otherwise.
